Note & Key

Acceptable Use Policy

Last updated May 12, 2026. Operated by Note & Key, based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. What you can and can't do on Note & Key. Applies to every account — teachers, students, parents — and every piece of content you upload (recordings, sheet music, lesson notes, messages, profile photos).

The short version

Note & Key is a tool for legitimate private music teaching. Use it for that. Don't use it to upload illegal content, harass people, or impersonate someone.

1. What you may not upload or share

You may not use Note & Key to upload, store, or transmit:

  • Illegal content of any kind under the laws of British Columbia, Canada or the user's jurisdiction.
  • Child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Any such content is reported to NCMEC and law enforcement immediately; the account is terminated; data is preserved for investigation.
  • Material that depicts or facilitates the sexual exploitation of children, including any sexual content involving anyone under 18.
  • Content that harasses, threatens, defames, or doxes any person — students, teachers, families, or anyone else.
  • Hate speech targeting protected groups (race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, or veteran status).
  • Self-harm encouragement or content glorifying violence against any person.
  • Sexually explicit material, pornographic content, or material primarily intended to arouse.
  • Spam, phishing, or malicious code — including links designed to steal credentials or distribute malware.
  • Copyrighted material you don't have rights to. Sheet music PDFs you upload must be either (a) public domain, (b) properly licensed to you, (c) student practice material under fair use / fair dealing in your jurisdiction, or (d) your own original work.
  • Audio or video recordings of anyone without their consent in jurisdictions that require two-party consent for recording.
  • Personal information about people who haven't consented to be added to your studio (e.g., contact details of a student's friends, family members of staff, etc.).

2. What you may not do with the service

  • Impersonate another person, business, or organization. Display names and studio names must be accurate.
  • Attempt to access another studio's data, another household's student records, or any data not assigned to your account.
  • Probe, scan, or test the vulnerability of our systems without our prior written permission. Responsible disclosure to support@noteandkey.app is welcome.
  • Use automated means (bots, scrapers, scripts) to access the service except through documented APIs.
  • Resell, white-label, or sublicense the service without our written permission.
  • Bypass usage limits (e.g., Free-tier student count, monthly upload caps) through multiple accounts. One studio per teacher.

3. Children's accounts

Music students are often minors. We treat this seriously:

  • The household login (shared between parent and student) must be managed by a parent or guardian for any student under 13.
  • Direct messaging in the app is teacher↔household only — there is no student-to-student or open chat.
  • Recordings uploaded by minors should be in a music-practice context only. Personal-life vlogging, party clips, etc. are outside the intended use.

See Privacy Policy for how children's data is handled (COPPA + PIPA-BC).

4. Reporting violations

See something that violates this policy? Email support@noteandkey.app with the studio name, content type (recording / message / sheet music / profile), and a short description. We aim to triage CSAM and threat reports within 24 hours; everything else within 7 business days.

If you are reporting illegal content under DMCA or equivalent copyright law, include the elements your jurisdiction requires — most importantly: a description of the work, the URL or in-app location of the alleged infringement, your contact information, and a good-faith statement that you are authorized to act on behalf of the rights holder.

5. Enforcement

When we receive a credible report (or detect a violation ourselves), we may:

  • Remove the content (recording, message, file, profile field).
  • Suspend the account temporarily while we investigate.
  • Terminate the account permanently for severe or repeated violations.
  • Preserve data and cooperate with law enforcement when required.
  • Report to NCMEC, IC3, or equivalent authorities for the most serious offenses (CSAM, credible threats of violence, trafficking).

We don't owe you advance notice before enforcement on egregious content. For lesser disputes (e.g., a sheet-music takedown notice), we'll generally email the uploader and give them a chance to respond before removing.

6. Appeals

If your account has been suspended or content removed, you can appeal by emailing support@noteandkey.app with the subject "Appeal: [your studio name]". We review every appeal individually. Final decisions are at our discretion under the Terms of Service.

7. Changes

We may update this policy. Material changes are emailed to active teachers. The May 12, 2026 date at the top reflects the current version.
